You noticed something important

Perhaps you’ve been hearing your child:

Say an unclear or slushy “ssss”

Say a different sound instead of /s/ (e.g., “thun” for sun, or “shun” for sun)

Avoid words with the /s/ sound altogether

You can be assured that these patterns are common in children aged 4 years and older who are still developing their /s/ sound.
By noticing, you’ve already taken an important step in supporting your child’s speech.
With the right guidance and consistent practice, many children can learn to say a clear /s/ sound.

A Valuable Time to Support the /s/ Sound

If your child is:

Preparing to start school or currently at school

Becoming more aware of how their speech sounds

Being asked to repeat themselves

Needing your help to repeat or clarify their words

Avoiding certain words

This stage can be a helpful time for focused practice.
Short, consistent practice at home can help your child build clarity, independence, and confidence in everyday communication.

Whether you are:

Waiting for Speech Therapy

Wanting guidance between Speech Therapy sessions

Looking for a structured way to practice at home

Seeking clear direction rather than piecing together advice

You are in a meaningful position to support your child’s speech at home.

If you would like professional guidance to help your child’s /s/ sound — the Clear /s/ Sound Course provides a ready-to-use plan developed by a Senior Speech and Language Pathologist that you can begin at home today.

Is this course suitable for my child?

The Clear /s/ Sound Course is best suited for children aged 4 years and older who:
  • Have difficulty pronouncing the /s/ sound clearly
  • Can pronounce a range of other speech sounds clearly
  • Can imitate simple sounds or words
  • Can understand and use words appropriate for their age
  • Can focus on practice for around 10–15 minutes at a time

The course focuses specifically on articulation of the /s/ sound, offering clear, targeted practice for this one sound. It does not cover phonological patterns, where a child could say a clear /s/ sound but predictably and consistently swaps the /s/ sound with another sound or leaves it out in words.

The course uses techniques commonly used in Speech Therapy but is not personalised or face-to-face. For children with moderate to complex communication difficulties, who may need individual assessment or support, working directly with a Speech Pathologist is recommended.

You Can Make A Difference

You are in a valuable position to support your child’s speech.

You know your child best

You understand what motivates them

You can include practice in daily routines

Short, consistent practice at home can make a real difference.
Even families attending face-to-face Speech Therapy are expected to practice at home. Consistent practice can help children build clearer, more confident communication.
Life can be busy. This course is designed to fit into family routines and progress at a pace that suits your child and family.
To help with practice expectations, we recommend:
For Sound to Sentence levels

Around 10–15 minutes of practice, 6 days per week.

At the Conversation level

10–15 minutes of practice, 6 days per week to begin.

Reduce practice days when your child is ready.

With clear guidance and consistent practice, you can confidently support your child’s /s/ sound at home.

Got Questions? We Got Answers!

  • Who is this course for?
This course is designed for parents and caregivers who want to support their child in practicing the /s/ sound at home.

It’s suitable for children 4+ who can pronounce a variety of speech sounds clearly but have difficulty with the /s/ sound, can follow simple instructions, and focus for short practice sessions.
  • What do I need for the course?
To access the course, you'll need a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone with a strong internet connection.

It can be helpful to print some of the resources, although many can be used digitally. Cutting out and laminating the flashcards from the Word level can make them more durable, and they can also be used for Phrase, Sentence, and Conversation level activities.

Some activities include simple items you may already have at home, like a counter (bead, pen lid, or similar) and dice for the Sound level games. We’ve designed the course to be as effortless as possible, so you won’t need any special equipment to get started.
  • How long will the course take?
The course is self-paced, so you can move through the lessons at a pace that suits your family. We understand how busy family life can be and have intentionally kept the course clear, focused, and time-efficient. The total duration of all the course videos is under 1 hour and 10 minutes.

For the Sound through to Sentence levels, we recommend short practice sessions of around 10–15 minutes, for 6 days per week. Once your child reaches the Conversation level, practice frequency can reduce based on your child's progress.

The time it takes for your child to reach the course goal of clearly saying the /s/ sound independently in everyday conversation will vary from child to child. The course includes practical strategies to support effective practice and progress, and guides you on when to continue practicing and when your child is ready to move forward.
  • Is my child finding it hard to say the /s/ sound clearly, or is it a pattern?
Some children who find it hard saying the /s/ sound have an articulation difficulty, which means they have trouble pronouncing the /s/ sound itself. Their /s/ sound might sound unclear or slushy, or they may use another sound instead, for example saying “thun” instead of “sun”.

Other children may have a phonological pattern, which is a predictable sound rule that affects how they use sounds in words. For instance, a child might replace /s/ with /t/ in all words (“tun” for “sun”, “tock” for “sock”), or leave /s/ out entirely (“un” for “sun”, “it” for “sit”).

The Clear /s/ Sound Course is designed for children with an articulation difficulty. If your child can say the /s/ sound clearly alone but swaps it for the same sound in words every time, or leaves the /s/ out of words, this may suggest a phonological pattern instead. In that case, a phonological approach, rather than this course, may be more suitable.
  • Can this course be used alongside Speech Therapy?
Yes. This course can be done before, during, or while waiting for Speech Therapy. It provides structured guidance and practical resources to support /s/ sound practice at home.
  • Do you provide feedback on my child’s progress?
This course provides Goal Checkers to guide practice and help you see progress, but it does not include personalised feedback from Nic, our Senior Speech and Language Pathologist.
  • Is previous Speech Therapy experience required?
No experience is needed. The course is designed for parents and caregivers, with clear step-by-step guidance from a Senior Speech and Language Pathologist.
  • Can families outside Australia use this course?
Yes. This course can support English-speaking families worldwide, as the strategies taught are based on how the /s/ sound is pronounced in English.
  • How long will I have access to the course?
You will have lifetime access to all lessons and resources while the course is available, so you can revisit content when it’s helpful.
